Summer Skin Care

In northeast Ohio, the summer season brings relief from cold, grey winters that almost always leave in a tantrum with one last snowfall in late March or April.  Sunny, blue skies of summer beckon our family outdoors for trail runs, hikes in the park, holiday picnics, gardening and swimming.  We are eager to soak up the sunshine, breathe in fresh air and enjoy the ground under our bare feet.  Ah, summer.

Sunscreen, bug spray and water bottles litter counters from daily use.  To protect or heal the skin from the casualties of summer adventures,  I’ve shared four of my favorite essential oil recipes below.

Bug Repellent Spray:
1 oz. (travel size) glass spray bottle
1:1 ratio of distilled water and witch hazel (a suspension agent for EO)
10 drops Lavender Lavandula angustifolia essential oil
6 drops Lemongrass Cymbopogon flexuosus (or it’s cousin, Citronella Cymbopogon  nardus)
3 drops Cedarwood Cedrus atlantica

First Aid Roller Bottle:
(good for treating minor cuts and acne alike)
10ml glass roller bottle
Fractionated coconut oil
6 drops Lavender Lavandula angustifolia
3 drops Frankincense Boswellia carterii
3 drops Tea Tree Melaleuca alternifolia

Itch Relief Roller Bottle:
10ml glass roller bottle
Fractionated coconut oil
6 drops Lavender Lavandula angustifolia
4 drops of Peppermint Mentha piperita

Sunburn Relief:
Squirt of aloe vera gel
1-2 drops Lavender Lavandula angustifolia
