All plants use sunlight for photosynthesis to produce energy and grow. Select plants have a secondary metabolism, using the glucose from sunlight to manufacture essential oils. These oils are produced as a defense system against infection, damage, predators and weather variations. Extracted from the bark, roots, flowers and foliage of plants, essential oils can be used by the human body for similar benefits.
